Obituary for Merle D Yaskoski (Aspinwall)

BROOKFIELD- Merle D. Yaskoski, 93, a Brookfield resident for 68 years passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 in Quaboag Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center after an illness.

Merle was born in Jesup, Georgia to Leroy and Cora (Reddish) Aspinwall, one of nine brothers and sisters that predeceased her. Merle graduated from Odum High School and Freeman Business School and worked as a Civil Service stenographer in Washington, DC during WWII where she met her future husband, Chester, who was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. They were married in 1945 after Chester returned from serving overseas. They then returned to her husband’s hometown of Brookfield where they built their home and raised their family. Chester predeceased her in 2014.

Merle enjoyed sports, especially basketball, serving as captain of her high school basketball team, winning many titles. She was an expert seamstress, cook, loving mother and grandmother. Merle and Chester enjoyed winter trips to Florida escaping the cold and enjoying salt water fishing. They also drove to Alaska three times to visit family where they enjoyed salmon fishing and the beautiful scenery. Merle was a member of Brookfield Congregational Church serving her Church in many roles through the years.

Merle leaves her daughter Gwendolyn Yaskoski, her son Wayne and wife Liisa of Brookfield; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Yaskoski and his wife Julie of North Brookfield, twin granddaughters, Lindsey and Lauren Yaskoski of Westminster, sister-in-laws Florence Yaskoski of Spencer, Shane Yaskoski of Chicago and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Quaboag Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center and Compassus Hospice for the compassionate care and comfort given to Merle and family members.

Friends and family are invited to attend a calling hour on Wednesday, February 15,2017 from 10-11AM in Pillsbury Funeral Home 3 West Brookfield Rd.Brookfield.The funeral will follow at 11:00AM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Brookfield Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Merle may be made to Brookfield Congregational Church Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 457, Brookfield, MA 01506.
