Obituary for Olive H Tuttle (Hinkley)

BARRE-Olive (Hinkley) Tuttle, 99, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Susan Giarusso with three generations of family at her bedside.

She was the daughter of Ernest and Olive Armstrong Hinkley and a lifelong resident of Barre. She was a graduate of Barre High School and was the last surviving member of the class of 1934.

Olive was well known around Barre for her May Baskets, Halloween popcorn balls, and apple squares. She was active throughout her life participating in various social activities at the Barre Senior Center including lunch and putting together jigsaw puzzles, as well as always attending a multitude of family events. She was a member of the No. 4 Schoolhouse, the Barre Historical Society, where she was the secretary for many years and the Barre Congregational Church where she participated for many years in the "Mustard Seed" ministry preparing and serving meals to the needy in Worcester, Massachusetts. Olive was also a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants with her lineage being traced back to Stephen Hopkins. She worked for 30 years at the Barre Wool Combing Company and upon its closing in 1974 she found work as a homemaker for the elderly.

Besides her parents, Olive was predeceased by her son David P. Tuttle in 2007, her son-in-law, Carmello Giarusso in 2012 and her brother David A. Hinkley in 1981.

All the members of the family would like to thank her daughter, Susan Giarusso and grandson William E. Tuttle III for the hard work and devotion they showed to Olive in her last years of life. Their dedication and love allowed Olive to participate in life to her fullest until her last days with us.

Besides her daughter, Susan, Olive leaves a son, William E. Tuttle Jr. and his wife Anne from Barre.

She leaves 9 Grandchildren and their spouses including, David and Michelle Giarusso of Peabody, MA, Diana Giarusso and companion Marcy Lister of Denver CO, Suzie Giarusso of VA, Gina Stephenson of Mansfield MA, Billy and Suzanne Giarusso of Barre MA, William E. Tuttle III of Barre MA, Michael and Jean Tuttle of Chevy Chase MD, Mark and Diana Tuttle of Barre MA and David and Rebecca Tuttle of Barre MA.

She Leaves 17 Great-Grandchildren, Branden, Catlin, Bridget, Olivia, Michael, Christopher, Evan, Sidney, Thomas, Julia, Benjamin, Colin, Zach, Sean, Andrew, Morgan and Alexa.

She also leaves 2 Great-Great Grandchildren, Cooper and Bella.

At Olive’s request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced. Olive will be laid to rest in the Glen Valley Cemetery in her beloved Barre.
